The biological meaning of an adult animal or human is one who has fully grown. For humans adults have significance that is shaped by moral and social concepts. As opposed to a "non-adult" or "minor", a legal adult has attained the age of majority and is therefore considered an independent, self-sufficient person and responsible. Sometimes referred to as "majors", they can also be considered to be at the age of adulthood. The age when a child becomes an adult legally is 18; however, the definition of legal maturity can be different depending upon the nation or legal system as well as the state of their mental health.

At the point that a person reaches physical and intellectual maturity this is known as adulthood. The age of adulthood typically begins when a person reaches 21, which is the average age for adults. In general, middle age is around 40 years old, followed by a period of around 60. There are three primary phases of adulthood: early adulthood (18 up to the mid-30s), middle adulthood (mid-30s to mid-60s) and then late adulthood (mid-60s until end of life). It is the time of physical maturity we are at when we turn 20 to 40 years aged. The size and weight of our bodies are likely to grow. In the early years of adulthood, we attain the top of our physical abilities.
