In the biological sense, an adult animal or human is one that has completely developed. In the context of humans, the term adult has implications that are based on moral and social concepts. In contrast to a non-adult or "minor", a legal adult is at the point of majority, and therefore is considered independent, self-sufficient, and responsible. The word "major" is a term used to define these individuals. The general consensus is that the age at which a person legally matures is 18. However, this can vary depending on legal rights and the country of origin as well as psychological development.

In the lifespan of a human being adulthood is the time when a person has achieved full physical and intellectual maturity. Most people think that adulthood starts at 20 years or older. Old age is about 60 years later than middle the age of 60. There are three major stages of adulthood early adults (18 until mid-30s), middle adulthood (mid-30s through mid-60s) and then later adulthood (mid-60s until end of life). At the beginning stage of adulthood (between 20 and 40) then our bodies are at their peak of maturity, even though the weight and height of our bodies may rise slightly. In early adulthood our physical abilities are at their peak. These include muscle strength as well as reaction speed.
